Alex Maddrell says:
Carefully prepare the seed-bed in advance of sowing. A stale seed-bed will allow weeds lurking in the top-soil the chance to germinate in advance of sowing.

Clear the seedling weeds and mark out the rows with pegs and strings allowing for the mature size of the plants. The spaces between rows should be greater than the width of the hoe head by at least 10 cm and prior to planting the seeds the soil should be worked with the hoe to loosen it up and disrupt early weed growth. Small stones can be removed at this time.

Use the narrow side of the hoe to make the seed drill by pulling it along the edge of the string. Then plant the seeds and cover with the hoe by gently pulling the soil over the seeds.

Regularly disrupt the weed growth between the marked rows. This can be done from a distance avoiding trampling and Once the plants emerge regular use of the hoe will allow the plants to flourish. This should be done by carefully pushing or pulling the hoe away from the plants: a 'Look' and 'Do' approach."
